The food, beverage and grocery products industry is:

  • A major contributor to the Australian economy – generates sales and service income in excess of $100 billion annually.
  • Australia’s largest manufacturing sector – 28 per cent of total manufacturing.
  • Australia’s largest manufacturing employer - 315,000 people.
  • A significant source of regional jobs -  152,000 employees in rural and regional areas.
  • The sector accounts for 9.1 per cent of Australia's total international trade valued at $49 billion in 2008-09.
  • The industry exported $25 billion worth of value-added products in 2008-09.
  • The industry is export focused but imports are rising fast, eroding the trade surplus historically enjoyed by the industry.
  • The value of food and beverage imports has risen by 40 per cent in the last five years.

  • A major market for Australian produce –  sources more than 90 per cent of ingredients from Australian agriculture.
